The Cubans, called the Los Cabrones, is a street gang appearing in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories. They are led by Umberto Robina and control the Little Havana district in Vice City. The Cubans are considered the prominent gang of the south end of the mainland, considering that they defeated the Cholos in 1984 and most likely the Haitians in 1986. They serve as an ally gang to the player in both games.

The Cubans in GTA VCS.

n 1984, the Cubans are known as the Los Cabrones and are in a conflict over control of Little Havana and Little Haiti with a Mexican street gang named the Cholos. Umberto Robina employs Victor Vance to aid him in his fight against the Cholos. Umberto Robina asked Victor to prove his worthyness to his gang by picking up a package while racing around Downtown with Hilberto, Carlos, Fernandez, Ronaldo and other Cuban gang members.

After winning the race, Victor then begins to work with the Cubans. Tasks include killing various Cholos gang members who are causing havoc in Little Havana, and picking up Umberto's father, Alberto Robina from Hyman Memorial Stadium to avoid possible abduction and/or murder. The Cubans eventually win the war with the Cholos after stealing their weapon supply and destroying their warehouse, leaving Little Haiti open for Haitian control, which takes place two years later.

1986

In 1986, the Cubans are once again in a business conflict with another local gang called the Haitians, who have since taken control of Little Haiti following the Cholos defeat. The Haitians gang has been stealing business from the Cubans, resulting in some members of the gang to assassinate the first Haitian Gang Lord as an act of revenge. Unaware that the Cubans were responsible, Tommy is asked by Avery Carrington to finish the job by killing the new Haitian Gang Lord while disguised as a Cuban gangster, resulting in a gang war to erupt between the two sides and to cause real estate prices to drop. Following this, the Haitians declare a gang war between them and the Cubans, attack them and invading Little Havana. After learning of Tommy's killing of Leo, and thus being impress by it, Umberto Robina hires him to work for them.

Umberto is first unimpressed with Tommy, and asks him if he can handle a boat properly while being supervised by Rico. If Tommy successfully does, Umberto hires him for his "real" work. The Cubans are involved in a major shootout with members of the Haitian gang at their factory, resulting in major losses. Robina asks Tommy to go with his men and steal a van full of a drugs from the factory while providing cover-fire against the attacking Haitians. Afterwards, he helps the Cubans ambush a drug deal that is taking place on Starfish Island between the Haitians and the Streetwannabes, then help them destroy the drug processing plant owned by the Haitians that leads to Cuban victory.

Other Mission Appearances

The Cubans first appear in Guardian Angels, being involved in a drug deal between Ricardo Diaz and his crew. Members of the Haitian gang show up and attempt to ambush the deal, but are fought off by them and Diaz' crew, aided by both Tommy and Lance.

While working for the Cubans, Tommy also undertakes tasks that involves working against them, while being secretly drugged by the Haitian gang leader. The first mission is during Bombs Away! where Tommy controls an RC Barron equipped with the ability to drop bombs to destroy the Cuban's drug boats.

Tommy kills several members of the gang with a sniper rifle from a distance in Dirty Lickin's in order to help the Haitians win a fist-to-fist fight in Little Haiti.

Cubans can appear during Rampages as the chosen gang that the player may need to waste members of.

Background

Behavior

The Cubans are seen walking the streets in groups and aren't seen patrolling the streets separately. The gang isn't ordinarily hostile towards Tommy Vercetti, but will only attack in self-defense. The gang attacks with their guns or with their fists. Like other gangs, the gang will attack the player if the player is caught carjacking a fellow gangster from their car.

The Cubans are hostile towards other gangs that are around their turf; Vercetti Gang, Haitians, and the Patrol Invest Group. Like other gangs, they can be seen being chased by police officers. The player can earn "Good Citizen Bonuses" by helping the officer beat down the gangster, although the player must be careful as the fleeing gangster or fellow gangsters around the area will attack the player if seen.

Weapons

In both games, the Cubans use the pistol as their primary weapon of choice outside of missions, or seen fighting with their fists. The gang also uses other weapons during missions.

  • Uzi - during the missions Guardian Angels and Cannon Fodder
  • M4 - during the mission Cannon Fodder
  • Tec 9 - during the mission Trojan Voodoo

Appearance

In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, one of the Cuban gangsters appear to be wearing black hats, beige colored shirts with a black under shirt, grey jeans and black shoes. The other Cuban member wears a red bandana around the head, white shirt with a red circle and Japanese writing, light blue jeans, and white shoes. There car of a choice is a modified black Hermes with a flame paint job.

In Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, the Cubans appear more business like, wearing red or blue polo shirts, grey or maroon pants, as well as brown shoes. They still use the modified Hermes from GTA Vice City, but with a grey paint job.

Cuban-American discrimination controversy

In the third version of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, mostly in the PC version, the game had all references of the Haitian and Cuban people removed, (along with a number of trademarks), in response to the Cuban and Haitian groups of the United States, who threatened to use action against Rockstar Games, on the basis that they were discriminated against. As a result the Cubans were simply referred to as the Los Cabrones in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories.

Trivia

  • The Vercetti Gang is hostile towards the Cubans, even though the Cubans are friendly towards Tommy, leader of the Vercetti Gang. Their conflict may be simply over turf.
  • The term "Los Cabrones" is a Spanish word that means little bastards in English.
