Body Armor is a

Body armor pickup 1

Body Armor pickup in GTA VC.

pickup in the Grand Theft Auto series that serves primarily to protect the player's health from specific forms of damage, most notably gunfire. In most cases, the pickup is illustrated as a protective blue vest.

Description[]

GTA 1 - GTA 2[]

The pickup was first introduced in Grand Theft Auto I, then continued to appear in later games, Grand Theft Auto London and Grand Theft Auto II. In these early top-down games, the armor served their intended purpose, adding 10 more hitpoints to the player's existing health, but provided no protection for the player if they were to fall from great heights, runned over by vehicles, or beaten up by the police and arrested. Amor can mostly be found spawning in specific locations or in crates, and in GTA II, can be acquired by crushing specific cars.

GTA III - GTA Vice City Stories[]

Body armor continued to appear between Grand Theft Auto III and Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, undergoing several more evolutions. In all its appearances, armor now offer mearly the same amount of hit points as the player's full health bar, doubling the resistance to damage. The amor hit points remained until Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, where the armor appears as a grey bar. In addition, the armor can now provide protection for the player if they were to fall from heights, run over by vehicles, and even protect the player from melee attacks; the armor in GTA SA and GTA VCS is an exception. The armor now doesn't provide protection if the player falls, while the armor in Grand Theft Auto Advance provides no protection from melee attacks.

In addition to spawing in specific locations, body armor can now be purchased at Ammu-Nation stores, as well as entering the police SWAT trucks. Like the player's health, armor hit points between GTA Vice City and GTA Vice City Stories (and GTA Advance) can typically be increased easily by completing side-missions (such as "Vigilante"), as well as completing the game to a full 100%.

GTA IV - GTA Chinatown Wars[]

Armor in GTA IV has been refashioned to protect the player mainly from bullets. It offers only a little protection to falls, collisions with vehicles on foot, and melee attacks (including hand-to-hand combat with or without melee weapons), increasing the player's chances of death from these hazards. Armor in GTA Chinatown Wars appears to revert to pre-GTA IV settings.
