The "GIGN" name is derived from internal files of GTA Vice City.
The French Secret Service appear twice during the events of GTA Vice City. They first appear in "Mall Shootout" then later in "All Hands On Deck". These missions, which are given to Tommy Vercetti by Juan Cortez, relate to Cortez's conflict with with the French authorities overe the illegal purchase of chips (which are properties of the French government presumably to be used for military equipment). The situation quickly esculates when Cortez is forced to flee Vice City for an unknown country.
During "Mall Shootout", the agents intervene in a deal between Tommy Vercetti and Pierre La Ponce, forcing the dealers to flee from a hail of gunfire from the GIGN. The unit is easily confused with the VCPD SWAT, as both units share the same type of uniform and voices. During "All Hands ON Deck", the French close in on Cortez's yacht, causing him to flee the city. The GIGN agents attempt to block his escape and kill Cortez, but their attempts are thwarted by Tommy, who helps Cortez escape while killing a number of French personnel. During an early cutscene of the mission, DGSE agents can be seen arriving at the marina in black colored Washingtons, which aren't reachable to the player. Other vehicles they use during the mission include various boats, as well as two Mavericks and a Hunter.

- The uniforms that the GIGN wear in the game are the same uniforms that the VCPD SWAT wore in a beta shot of the game before their final uniform style was chosen.
